Truffle prices drop at the end of season

This year it has been perculiar for so many things, but again a new surprise has happened as the end of this season comes. Because ordinary would be that as we approach the end of season truffle price rises, but often does not the quality, also truffles become smaller. Instead, this season, mainly because the plantations of the center of Spain are still in full harvest, the quality of the truffle is even better, a good size and very ripe, but as the demand is offset by the huge offer, prices are even lower from last week, 100€ less at origin! I haven’t seen this for the last 19 years I’m involved with truffles. Some traders comment is also the lack of money in the target markets abroad…
Anyway this peculiar season could become a norm in the coming years, as more and more truffle orchards start fruiting. The price of Tuber melanosporum at origin could easily stabilize at 300-400€/kg, with fewer variations between seasons. Be ready for this! I guess this also will increase demand, as truffles will be more used in cuisine, for example for desserts, also lots of now restaurants will use them in their menus…
Will see…
Cheers,
