Leiodes beatle pest in 2015-16 spanish truffle season

Today we have been visiting several truffle orchards in Teruel as a part of our black truffle growing seminar or Barcelona Truffle Tour.

A week before Christmas and 17ºC during the day at 1200 m.o.s.l in Teruel! The cold has not arrived and truffles take more time to get aroma and one of the main truffle pests, Leiodes beatle larvae keep on  drilling fresh truffles on the ground. Leiodes populations normally decrease at this stage due to cold but not this year.

You can see in the pics an adult taking off, a truffle full of larvae and one of the traps full of adults at the bottom.

There is almost no truffles in France nor Italy and it looks like this year most of the black truffle will come from Spain and mainly from the irrigated orchards. This is the main reason why black truffle prices raised so much this week up to 6-700€/kg to the harvester. First grade fresh truffles are sold to the restaurants at 800-1000€/kg! too much for the quality of the truffles at this stage. Such high prices will probably decrease the demand soon.

More updates soon!

Cheers
